What is an 'Old School'
geocacher?? We started in October 2003.... I
have read
postings from cachers that are a bit older than us and enjoyed
them as
well as learned from them. We have been quite lately because of
a
serious leg injury to me that keeps me home bound for the time
being.

I guess I would say "old school" are
those that started in the 2001 to
2003 range. When we started here
in Tucson, there were really only two
here, us and Team Scotti. For
awhile there, we were just hiding caches
for each other.

I really can't take anything you say
seriously when you say that trees
suck. :-)
I know all about
eastern Washington. I went to college in Pullman. Our
plan is to
move to Olympia.

The funny thing is that we had pretty
much gotten out of the game before
2004, so in my opinion, and my opinion
only, I can't consider that old
school.
It did remind me of
something funny though. Back in 2006 I logged a
couple finds, and
one of the cache owners who started in 2006 welcomed
me to the game and
offered to help me get more familiar with the game.
Of course we had
over 400 finds and while that is a drop in the bucket
to what many have
now, it is hardly a newcomer to the game. :-)

I am really glad that you rephrased
that.
Do me a favor, go down to the Spar Cafe and have their Salmon
Ceaser
Salad. That way I can live vicariously through
you.
For those not familiar with Olympia, here are a couple shots I
took in
2007.

http://myblueheaven.com/blogpics/Rotunda.jpg
http://myblueheaven.com/blogpics/I5Lights.jpg
http://myblueheaven.com/blogpics/tumwater3.jpg
If
you head out to the coast, you can see things like
this
http://myblueheaven.com/blogpics/WACoast1.jpg
http://myblueheaven.com/blogpics/lighthouse.jpg
I
have a lot more, but these are the ones that I didn't have to upload
anywhere.
Also, if you are in Olympia and want to go a little
south, you can see
this.
http://myblueheaven.com/blogpics/Multnomah.jpg
Don't get
me wrong, Arizona has a lot to offer, but you will never see
waterfalls
like these, or a lighthouse here.

You just *had* to post these, didn't
you? I've been trying to get out
to (meaning, find a job in) the
Pacific NW area for a while now. You're
not helping my unsatisfied
longing for trees and water! :)
(Very beautiful shots, by the
way!)
-Lisa, aka PoledraDog...not old school (I think around 2006?),
and very
casual geocacher, but still enjoy it very much when I do get to
go.

Sorry, I
didn't mean to do that, just to show why I love the area so
much. :-)
Sounds like I am not alone!
Arizona has a lot to offer also, hard to

Hi everybody!
I'm
still around up in the Prescott area, but don't get time/remember
to
read the list very often. Hubby "VStar" (he now owns a MotoGuzzi,
not a Yamaha anymore) and I ("Lightning 1996YCJP" reflects my ID
number from the Jeep Posse, of which I am not longer a member, but
you
can't change your caching name!!) get out to cache only
sporadically
because of his work and my health problems which are
slowly worsening.
But we have fun when we do get out!
I'm of
the "old school cachers" -- started in July of 2001 when the
closest
cache was in Camp Wood, I think, put out by Larry "Wyle E".
Flash of
the Jeep Posse and I put out a bunch of caches to get things
going
in the area...wow, that was 8 years ago.
A couple of us Prescott
cachers were batting around the idea of
hosting a 5th anniversary
Prescott "Beat the Heat" Event like we had
back in summer of 2004.
If we were to go ahead and plan and do all the
work to do an event,
who might be interested and able to come up and
attend?

Sorry about your leg,
Bob. I'd say that in AZ, someone is "Old School"
if they know about
Wyle E (Phoenix) and Lincoln )Prescott). what do
you think?
Reasonable definitions?

Hmmm.... Last I checked we had
waterfalls and light houses.
Mooney Falls at Havasupai in the Grand
Canyon. We have a few of our own
impressive
falls.

And
believe it or not, Lake Havasu has lighthouses.. Ok, so the lighthouses
are
miniature replicas... But a lighthouse none the
less.

That was a very fun event cache! Has
it been that long?
I have not been to an even cache in quite a while.
But, depending on the
day, I would want to take a shot at that
one.

Thanks Trisha,
I
see Lincoln almost weekly and have lunch with him and a bunch from the
ham
radio community. Linda and I would definitely come to an event
cache
here, try to help a little bit.

Speaking of Wyle E... How many of you
other oldtimers remember the time a
non-existent cache was "placed" in
Phoenix not far from Wyle E's home.
Others in on the joke kept posting
found logs. I think it drove him nuts
for a little while because he
couldn't find a cache everyone else seemed to
have no trouble with.
Now that was a good joke.

An old school geocacher is a geocacher
who still uses a listserv in the year 2009. I think I just qualified myself ?

I do have a question, how many of the
"old school" geocachers are here
on the
list?

Hi everybody!
I'm still around up in the
Prescott area, but don't get time/remember
to read the list very
often. Hubby "VStar" (he now owns a MotoGuzzi,
not a Yamaha anymore)
and I ("Lightning 1996YCJP" reflects my ID
number from the Jeep
Posse, of which I am not longer a member, but you
can't change your
caching name!!) get out to cache only sporadically
because of his
work and my health problems which are slowly worsening.
But we have
fun when we do get out!
I'm of the "old school cachers" -- started in
July of 2001 when the
closest cache was in Camp Wood, I think, put
out by Larry "Wyle E".
Flash of the Jeep Posse and I put out a bunch
of caches to get things
going in the area...wow, that was 8 years
ago.
A couple of us Prescott cachers were batting around the idea
of
hosting a 5th anniversary Prescott "Beat the Heat" Event like we
had
back in summer of 2004. If we were to go ahead and plan and do
all the
work to do an event, who might be interested and able to
come up and
attend?

I'll bet Deb and I hold the record for oldest
school geocachers still in the
game with the fewest finds. First
log: 9/1/2001. Total logs: 247.

Trisha -
Just to let you know,
that you absolutely can change your caching name - if
that is something you
want to do - this was the news from GroundSpeak about
a year or so ago, and
i know a few cachers that have done so successfully.
Just an
FYI!!

I was hoping my comment
would bring Bob out into the discussion,
'cause I figured that he
had been caching before me. My first find
July 1, 2001 was actually
Prieta View, Camp Wood was the next day on
July 2,
2001.
