I have to agree with Jim Scotti.  Looking for benchmarks can be quite an experience.  In urban areas you have to deal with construction and growth changes.  And you will find benchmarks in strange locations, the foundation of a building for example.  For the real remote benchmarks actually finding the boulder or rock outcropping to which they are attached can be quite a challenge.  A lot of benchmarks also have other markers (reference marks) nearby to help in locating the actual benchmark.  Take a look at the benchmark section of the fourms on geocaching.com and you will get a real education.
