I assume this is how the rumor mill works once unsubstantiated
allegations are published as fact:
 
We've just returned from a camping trip in the White Mountains. We were
going to try for a few caches there, and asked some folks there if
they'd like to join us. Their reply: "Oh, no! We wouldn't do that. We
heard all about geocaching, and we heard the government is going to
outlaw it!"
